Fall Fishing = Increased Catching

The fall of the year can really be frustrating out on the lake. Big fish head deep into the grass making finding fishing extremely tough. Some days out there you just wish you could get a bite regardless of the size. and make it difficult to have a fun day on the water.
There are a few things that I do when a customer says, “Man, let’s just get a bite!” First, I switch him over to finesse worms or 4-inch grubs.
This year’s spawn has grown to six inches, and the previous year’s bass class has now grown to twelve inches. These are the adolescents and teenagers of the bass world; at this time of year are out terrorizing the neighborhood. They like smaller baits and generally feed more aggressively than the bigger fish, so downsizing really helps! Instead of burying themselves deep in the grass, the small fish work bait on the edges and feed in bunches. Look for the bait being chased. In most cases it’s young bass working the small bait and all you need to do is fish where they are.
The second thing I do if the feeding is in open water is use a quarter-ounce Rat-L Trap to find those bites. Yo-yo that ’trap just over the dying grass and run it through the scattering bait, and I promise you’ll catch those small fish. Hold on tight, though, because you’ll be surprised how hard these small fish will hit your ’trap. Just this week I had a 10-inch bass knock a rod right out of the hand of one of my clients, and I was just able to grab the rod before it went into the water. He was using braided line, and that fish slamming his bait just caught him off guard.
Small fish can turn a tough day into some fun on the lake. Come fish with me on Guntersville; I’ll show you how to find them!
